Prompted by the news post, I figured this might be of interest: https://github.com/Hotride/OrionUO
It's an open source, OpenGL client for Ultima Online. Now, whilst it is 2D, there's always the possibility of adding effects. A proper rain shader, for example. The original one isn't even a shader, I reckon. It looks like a bunch of blue droplet sprites moving in a diagonal line. No rain splatters, no wind influence, nada.
Performance isn't great on AMD GPUs. Much better than the horrific 10fps on the original client (Classic Client), but performance drops when there's a bunch of action on screen, especially when zoomed out. Another aspect that could use some polishing and buffing.
It's been in active development for the past half a year or so, with updates every day. Did a bit of testing for it, but got burned out after my mates got cold feet and decided to not help out. The devs actively engaged with my threads on their forum 'ere: https://forum.orion-client.online/index.php
The best part, is that there are open source server packages for the game. ServUO is the more actively developed one, and the granddaddy RunUO still gets a bit of work done on it every once in a while.
Thought it'd be worth a mention.
